- Assume you on average spend 2 minutes per slide.
- If you do not use many formula, consider to use a PowerPoint or Google slide rather than a beamer slide.
- The introduction should start from motivation, questions, and "this paper" slides.
- The questions list the questions to be answered in the talk and motivation explains why it is important to answer the questions.
- "This paper" slide briefly explains the methods and materials used in the analysis. A successful "this paper" slide gives the audience an impression that the analysis is doable and the results are reliable.
- Imagine telling a story using the slides. Check whether the slides run smoothly to tell the story. One way to check this is to look over just the titles of the slides. If the slides run smoothly, the sequence of the titles should tell the story.
- Before making a slide, consider what the main message of the slide is. Consider the role of the slide in your story. Consider what had to be discussed beforehand to make the message of the slide make sense. Consider how you transit to the next slide.
- Imagine telling a story using the slide. Sentences, figures, and tables in a slide should be organized in the order of the story from the top to the bottom and from the left to the right.
- The story you tell should refer to every single item of the slide. If some items are not referred to in the story, the items should be removed from the slide.
- The title of a slide should state the main sentence of the slide. You should not waste the title space for writing meaningless section names.
- Don't repeat the same sentence in the title, bullet point, and the caption and labels of figures and tables. It is a waste of space.
- Keep using the same words for explaining the same concepts. Do not rephrase the same concepts with different words.
- Explain the intuitions and concepts by words before introducing the formula.
- Explain the takeaway after showing figures and tables.
- In a beamer slide, do not use a
table and figure environment. Directly insert tabular for a table and an image file for a figure. Instead of giving information in the caption and footnote, give the same information in the title and the sentences of the slide.
- Use the same sentence patterns in the bullet point sentences as much as possible. For example, if a bullet point starts with a verb, other bullet points should start with verbs as well.
- The bullet points can be nested at most once.
- Center every figure and table. The size of a figure should be adjusted relative to the
\textwidth or \textheight in a beamer slide.
